This is the work I have come up with in Adobe Illustrator. In the previous blog post I discussed how I wanted my poster to convey a message about video game addiction by portraying some sort of mechanical brain, contrasting the idea of free will with the ideas of obedience and lack of thought. For this blog post I aimed to try and create an early version of this brain within Illustrator.

To start, the first thing I did was to try and create a human head for the brain to be in using the curvature tool, however this proved to be tricky as I couldn’t get the shape quite right. In the end I decided to take a profile shot of my own head and uploaded it to Illustrator. I then used the curvature tool to trace around the basic outline of my own head which turned out to be a lot easier than trying to make one from scratch. Here is both the head I created and the picture I traced around:

Next I started to draw the brain itself. After creating the basic shape I experimented with ways to make it look mechanical. At first I struggled to come up with ideas however after a while I noticed that from a certain angle the brain almost looked similar in shape to a video game controller. I added the basic features of a controller to the brain and decided that I quite liked how it looked and decided that this was the design I wanted to go with from now on. The buttons and analog sticks were created with both the pen tool and the ellipse tool. Finally I used the paintbrush tool to draw a wire stemming out from the back of the controller.

My final poster design will be a combination of these two drawings and will also feature a typography of the words “Hello World”, the significance of which I explained in the previous blogpost.
