Edward Tufte’s theory of small multiples suggests that similar looking images are easier to tell apart when placed within a close proximity of each other. Above are some buttons / icons I have designed to be used within the UI. The first row are buttons that will allow the player to do certain actions upon pressing them. In order to stay true to the theory of small multiples I made sure to make them all look consistent in their designs, with them all using the same colour pallet and basic shapes, however I have made them different enough for the user to be able to easily tell them apart when placed along side each other even without having to look at the accompanying text. The second row are the icons for fuel cans and repair kits that the player will be able to purchase within an item shop menu within the game. The player will be able to purchase small, medium and large versions of each item. When in the menu screen the three different sizes of the items will be presented right along side each other allowing the player to instantly be able to tell the differences between the three versions just visually.
