These are the notes and sketches I created for the conceptual poster that I intend to make for this assignment. My poster will be about the affects that video games have on our mental health with video game addiction being the main focus. In order to figure out which two ideas I wanted to combine in order to convey a message about video game addiction I broke the two main categories down into words and included mini sketches for a couple of them. Eventually I came up with two ideas that I quite liked and drew some sketches to depict them.
The first one is a mechanical brain connected to some wires that is thinking “Hello World”, a phrase commonly associated with programming and algorithms. This design would contrast a brain, which would usually be associated with consciousness and free will, with circuitry and the phrase “Hello World”, which would be associated with computers and AI. This would imply that by giving into their addiction they are losing their humanity and are slowly becoming more like a machine, incapable of free thinking and having control over their own lives.
The second design I came up with is of a man sat down playing video games saying “Hello World” to the TV while an open window showing a beautiful day outside is right besides him. By saying “Hello World” to the TV rather than to the real world this implies that the virtual world is his true world and is where he spends most of his time rather than spending that time appreciating the real beautiful world that is all around him, thus wasting away his life.
For my final poster I think I will go with the mechanical brain as I feel as though it is more conceptual than the second design.
